The Breast Care Center at West Palm Hospital has been designated by the American College of Radiology (ACR) as a Breast Center of Excellence.

By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy). Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

Breast Care Services

Our Breast Care Center is especially designed to provide a serene and tranquil environment for our patients, staff, and physicians. The use of warm colors, textures, and natural elements— including light, water, and sound—help soothe the mind and calm the body. Services offered within this comfortable and compassionate environment of the Breast Care Center include:

Breast MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is used to evaluate abnormalities seen on a mammogram or ultrasound. MRI also allows physicians to easily visualize the muscle and chest wall. An MRI exam is highly sensitive for women with dense breasts and aids in the visualization of breast implants. The MRI is helpful in the evaluation of breast cancer and can characterize or spot small lesions not picked up by mammography.

Breast Ultrasound
Our ultrasound further studies a specific area on the mammogram or a lump discovered by the patient. This exam can determine the difference between a cystic or solid mass. Breast ultrasounds are often used in conjunction with a mammogram.

Bone Density Testing (DEXA)
DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) is used to determine your risk for bone fractures. It utilizes a small amount of radiation to evaluate the density of your bones and mineral content. Scans are safe, easy, and determine if you are at risk for osteoporosis. Knowing your risk of fracture is important. Our Prodigy equipment is a state-of-the-art fracture risk assessment tool.

Breast Biopsy
We offer a variety of tools for breast biopsy. Breast biopsies are performed to obtain a piece of tissue to evaluate for the possibility of breast cancer. We offer breast biopsy via mammography, ultrasound, and MRI under local anesthesia.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
This is a minimally invasive procedure that serves as an alternate to open surgery. This method uses stereotactic digital x-ray to precisely locate a lesion. We utilize the most state-of-the-art vacuum assisted biopsy device to remove multiple breast tissue for analysis. This procedure uses local anesthesia; no sutures are required and there is little or no pain.

Cyst Treatment
At West Palm Hospital we offer a variety of tools to address breast cysts inclusive of drainage and aspiration.

Digital Mammography
The image is displayed on a high resolution monitor with advanced software to enhance and magnify the images for optimal evaluation and interpretation by our expert radiologist. Advances include reduction in time of compression and lower average radiation dose.

Quality assurance images are viewed in seconds allowing review for evaluation prior to the patient leaving the room. Rapid diagnosis may be offered to you on the same day. Second opinion consults, thoughts and complete evaluations may be acquired at time of second opinion evaluations.

In addition to bringing together all the medical components of breast health, the Breast Care Center at West Palm Hospital sets a new standard by unifying the non-medical support services for patients. A full range of psychosocial, educational, and nutritional services are provided to assist the patient and family including:
